Our Bike Trailer
Over the years we have put tens of thousands of miles on our bike and we have learned to pack just the bare essentials. We have also been working on combining two of our hobbies, which are camping and biking. So far we have taken several camping trips, on the bike, to both Arkansas and Colorado. For these trips my wife has done a great job of packing light, but it is difficult to pack everything you need to camp when riding two-up. Due to the need to carry more gear, we have decided to start pulling a small trailer behind the bike.
I orginally began thinking about a bike trailer after our camping trip we made to Colorado. Fortunately, we had a chase truck that carried the supplies that we couldn't get loaded on the bikes. Since most of the bikes in our group were riding one up, they were able to pack everything they needed, on their own bikes. Although my wife and I did have some of our equipment on the chase truck, we did find it to be an inconvenient arrangement. Being self-contained is definately the way to go.
There are all sorts of trailers available, both commercial and homemade. I have decided to take the homemade approach for two reasons. First, I like to work with my hands and I enjoy the personal satisfaction from developing and completing DIY projects. Secondly, we will have a unique trailer instead of something that has been mass produced.
Before I continue, please be advised that I don't know of any motorcycle manufacturer that suggests a bike can safely tow a trailer. That being said, I would strongly advise against making any types of modifications to your bike in any way, shape, or form. While we are on the subject, please take a minute to read our Disclaimer page. Ok, now that the legal stuff is out of the way, let's move on.
Our hitch -
We have purchased a Denray hitch, which is pictured below. In addition to pics of our hitch, I am posting pics of other designs that I found interesting. I have also added various reference materials and/or links on different trailers. All of that info can be found on our Bike Trailer Info page.
